Europeans Demand More
A decade or two ago, most people would have said that winning a million pounds would have made them feel richer than they ever believed possible, but in this post-Euromillions world people are a great deal more ambitious. According to a recent National Lottery study, many Europeans now say that they would need a whopping £25 million or more in order to feel extremely rich, and a good number say that they would need £100 million!
The study gathered the responses of 4500 participants living in eight EU countries, and found that people living in Portugal were the most demanding, with 70% needing £25 million before they felt rich. 56% of Portuguese participants wanted £100 million. 45% of Spanish respondents wanted £25 million, followed by 37% of people in Austria, 35% in Switzerland, 26% in Ireland and 24% in Britain.
Although more Euromillions jackpots have been won in France than any other participating country, French participants were the least demanding of all, with just 21% saying that they would need £25 million or more to feel genuinely rich. Belgium was almost as modest, with 22% of people saying the same.
The question of which came first – Euromillions or the desire
for multi-millions – is hard to answer. What we can say with
confidence is that Euromillions has brought the idea of winning
many millions out of the realm of fantasy and – potentially
at least – within the realms of possibility for anyone who
chooses to play the Euromillions lottery. And with consecutive rollovers
creating jackpots of £25 million, £50 million and even
£100 million, there’s always the hope for even the most
demanding of players to win the wealth they need to feel rich.
