History of the Friday EuroMillions Draw
The first EuroMillions draw was held on Friday 13th February 2004 with just three countries - France, Spain and the UK - participating. By October 2004, six other countries had joined and the expansion of the game continued in May 2011 when a second weekly draw, to take place each Tuesday, was introduced.
For many players the Friday night draw remains the favourite as it has become part of their weekend routine. Friday is also the day associated with special jackpots as all EuroMillions Superdraws, which have a minimum guaranteed jackpot of €100 million, have traditionally been held on that day.
The first EuroMillions Superdraw was held on Friday 9th February 2007 and was won by a single ticket holder from Belgium. Since then, Superdraws have continued to be held several times a year, always on a Friday. Visit the EuroMillions Superdraws page to learn more.
Notable Friday EuroMillions Winners
Friday draws generally attract a significantly higher number of players which has resulted in a considerable number of significant jackpot wins.
The largest ever EuroMillions jackpot, capped at €190 million, was won on a Friday. This is the only time that the jackpot cap has been reached and the entire €190 million jackpot was won by Adrian and Gillian Bayford from the UK who banked approximately £148 million.
Ireland's biggest EuroMillions winner to date also scooped the jackpot on a Friday. Dolores McNamara, a mother of six from Limerick, won €115.4 million on 29th July 2005 and remains Ireland's largest jackpot winner to date.
The Friday draw again proved to be a lucky one, this time for France's record-holding EuroMillions jackpot winner. On 13th November 2012, an anonymous player from the Alpes-Maritimes region successfully matched all five numbers and two Lucky Stars to win a €169.8 million jackpot. This altruistic player then became the first French lottery winner to set up a charitable trust using his winnings.
Special Friday UK Millionaire Maker Draws
The Millionaire Maker (formally Millionaire Raffle) was introduced to UK players in 2009, with the first game played on Friday 13th November, and guaranteed at least one UK winner a prize of £1 million in every EuroMillions draw.
Special Millionaire Maker games are held periodically throughout the year and offer an increased number of £1 million prizes. The number of additional £1 million prizes varies from draw to draw and, as Friday draws tend to attract approximately two thirds more players than the midweek draw, most special UK Millionaire Maker draws are held to coincide with a Friday EuroMillions draw.
Previous special raffle draws include the 100 UK Millionaires (held in July 2012 and July 2013), £1 Million Every Month for a Year (held on Friday 31st May 2013) and the Millionaires Month (held during November and December 2011).
