How to Play

To play the lottery in France, select five numbers between 1 and 49 plus a Chance Number between 1 and 10. You can choose your own numbers or select the ‘Flash’ option to get a set generated at random. The game is available online or from authorised retailers at a cost of €2.20 per line.

You can quickly submit multiple entries by selecting more than five main numbers (up to a maximum of nine), or more than one Chance number (up to a maximum of 10). All the combinations of five main numbers and one Chance number within your selected range will be entered into the draw.

Prizes

You win prizes by matching your numbers to the winning numbers that are drawn. Prizes start from €2.20 for matching just the Chance number, and increase as you match more numbers. To win the jackpot, you must match all five main numbers and the Chance number.

The Loto jackpot starts at €2 million and rolls over when it is not won, increasing by €1 million each time. It is possible for the jackpot to roll over for a maximum of 34 consecutive draws. If there is still no top prize winner, the jackpot prize will roll down and be shared between players in the next winning prize tier.

The following table shows all the different winning combinations and the odds of winning.

Winning Combination Odds of Winning Percentage of Prize Fund
5 plus Chance 1 in 19,068,840 Jackpot
5 1 in 2,118,760 8.44%
4 plus Chance 1 in 86,677 2.06%
4 1 in 9,631 7.43%
3 plus Chance 1 in 2,016 4.44%
3 1 in 224 15.98%
2 plus Chance 1 in 144 12.43%
2 1 in 16 49.22%
1 plus Chance 1 in 28 €2.20
Chance number 1 in 18 €2.20

The percentage allocated to each prize category is taken after the prize money has been distributed to the jackpot and fixed prize tiers.

SuperLoto and Grand Loto

There are promotional events throughout the year when the jackpot is increased. In SuperLoto events, the jackpot is raised to €13 million even if it is much lower in the preceding draw. SuperLoto draws do not have to take place on set draw days. Instead, they usually take place on particular dates such as Friday 13th.

Grand Loto de Noel is the name given to the enhanced Christmas draw. The jackpot is set at €15 million and if nobody wins the top prize, it is split between winners in the lower categories.

2nd Tirage (2nd Loto draw)

You can also take part in a 2nd Loto draw for an extra €0.80 per line. This is a separate draw which sees five numbers selected between 1 and 49 – the Chance number is not used in the 2nd draw.

You play with your same numbers from the main game, so you don’t have to select any more. You win prizes for matching between two and five numbers. The winning combinations, odds and prizes are as follows:

Winning Combination Odds of Winning Prize
Match 5 1 in 1,906,884 €100,000
Match 4 1 in 8,667 Estimated €500
Match 3 1 in 201 Estimated €30
Match 2 1 in 14 Estimated €3

The jackpot prize and the Match 2 prize are fixed amounts. The other two prizes are pari-mutuel so the amount varies between draws. The fixed prizes are paid first using money from the prize fund, then of the remaining fund, 28% goes to players in the Match 4 category and 72% is allocated to Match 3.

French Loto Raffle

The French Loto Raffle is played alongside the main Loto game and offers guaranteed prizes. A unique raffle code is generated for each line of Loto numbers played, and ten winning codes are then selected at random. Each of the ten winners receives €20,000.

Special raffle draws are also held from time to time to create even more winners, with the Christmas raffle sometimes offering 100 prizes of €20,000.

Joker+

Joker+ is another French lottery game that you can play alongside Loto. The minimum bet is €1, or you can pay €2 to double the potential prize payouts. The Joker number is randomly generated and consists of seven digits between 0 and 9. You win prizes by matching the winning numbers in the correct order.

You can also take advantage of the ‘+ or – 1’ option, where one of your seven numbers can be changed after the draw. It can be increased or decreased by 1. For example, if your Joker number was 1234567 and the winning number was 1234566, your final number could be changed to 6 to give you a better prize. If you add the ‘+ or – 1’ option, the cost is doubled.

The following table shows all the different ways to win and the prizes that are available.
