A syndicate is a group of people who play a lottery together, allowing them to buy a number of tickets at a shared cost with an agreement to split any prizes won. Create Your Own Lottery Syndicate
If you want to create your own EuroMillions syndicate, start by building your team. It is estimated that more than half of current clubs in the UK are work-based, but you could also play with neighbours, family members or friends.
A structure needs to be in place before you start playing to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Appoint a syndicate manager, as EuroMillions prizes can only be paid out to one player according to UK National Lottery rules.
The person chosen to be syndicate manager should be trustworthy and willing to maintain an up-to-date syndicate agreement, signed by all members. This effectively works like a contract and will help to prevent any disputes.
The syndicate manager should keep track of payments, buy the relevant tickets and store them safely, before checking the tickets after a draw to tally up the prizes won. It is also a good idea to appoint another member of the team to re-check the tickets.
What to Include in Your EuroMillions Syndicate Agreement
Every group is different, but it is a good idea to have a set of syndicate rules in the form of an agreement to help protect everyone and ensure payouts are dealt with fairly. Some useful points to include may be:
- The date the syndicate began.
- The names of the members of the syndicate.
- Contact details for the syndicate manager.
- Confirmation of whether you are playing in either the Tuesday or Friday draws, or both draws each week.
- Details of how many entries your group will play in each draw.
- The numbers the group will play.
- The cost of each player's stake.
- The share of a prize that each player will receive.
- What will happen if a player does not pay their stake on time.
- What will happen if a player leaves the syndicate.
- A majority decision on whether the group will go public or remain anonymous if they win a big prize.
- A signed agreement from the syndicate manager promising to distribute any prizes won.
EuroMillions Syndicate Winners
It is estimated that one in five UK lottery prizes is won by a syndicate, and there have been some huge prizes snapped up by groups in the history of EuroMillions. The big winners include:
The Rogers family from Ireland hit the biggest jackpot in Irish lottery history when they won €175 million in February 2019. That huge jackpot was arrived at after a Superdraw and several more draws went by without a winner. The winning ticket was bought in the small village of Naul in County Dublin and word soon spread about the identities of the winners.
An Irish syndicate banked an incredible €88.5 million after matching all five main numbers and both Lucky Stars on 24th January 2017. The anonymous players were thankful for the ‘financial freedom’ the win provided and insisted they would not get carried away when they picked up their cheque, but they were also looking forward to booking some tropical holidays!
A group of office workers from Merseyside became known as the 'Magnificent Seven' after hitting the jackpot in November 2009 to scoop £45.5 million. Many of the players, whose ages ranged from 19 to 57, feared they were set to lose their jobs when they were contacted on a Sunday morning, but in fact they discovered they were each £6.5 million richer!
A family syndicate from Co Clare in Ireland won this jackpot in February 2022, eventually coming forward to claim it almost two months later. They said a few of them would upgrade their cars and they were keen to start travelling again after a difficult time during the pandemic, but the main focus would be on making sure the money helped the family for as long as possible.
