Large areas of the UK may be experiencing the warmest September temperatures for over 50 years, but it was a chilly period that forced the 68-year-old to reach for an extra layer. Quoted by Belfast Live, Jim spoke of how he came to discover the lucky ticket: “After some lovely hot weather it started to get a bit chilly. I had a look around the house for my jacket which I hadn’t worn for a while. When I put my hand in the pocket of my coat the ticket I bought was still there.

Not suspecting that the ticket was a winner, Jim headed out, completely unaware of the good news that was about to befall him: "When I was shopping at my local SuperValu store, I asked the young lady behind the counter to check it for me. She duly took the ticket and once she put it into the machine a noise went off – the two of just looked at each other wondering what was going on? The young girl called a member of her team over to check the machine and it was then that I discovered I was a lottery winner and the girls told me I needed to contact Camelot.”

Eager to discover the value of his windfall, the Newby resident contacted the National Lottery. Much to his surprise, Jim had scooped a prize of £1 million and a breathtaking Brazilian adventure thanks to the EuroMillions Mega Friday event. “I asked her to check everything again, asked her was she sure? My mind was totally buzzing, I just couldn’t process what was happening to me,” he explained. Jim has already mapped out plans on how he will be spending his new-found wealth: “I want to help some friends and family out. I’d also like to buy my flat and totally renovate it and maybe buy a new car as well.”

If you would like to follow in Jim’s footsteps and become an instant millionaire, tickets for tonight’s £33 million (€39 million) EuroMillions draw are available to purchase online and from all authorised retailers in participating counties. UK players are also reminded that entry into the UK Millionaire Maker draw is included in the price of a ticket, so don’t forget to check that code on your ticket. Best of luck!
