History of the Friday draw
The first EuroMillions draw was held on Friday 13th February 2004 with just three countries - France, Spain and the UK – taking part. By October 2004, six other countries had joined and the expansion of the game continued in May 2011 when a second weekly draw, to take place each Tuesday, was introduced.
Friday has traditionally been the day when special jackpots and Superdraws have been offered. The first EuroMillions Superdraw was held on Friday 9th February 2007 and was won by a single ticket holder from Belgium. Superdraws continue to be held several times a year, always on a Friday. To mark changes made to the game in 2016, a Superdraw was held on Friday 30th September which offered a jackpot of €130 million (estimated £100 million).
Mega Friday was also replaced by Mega Week in September 2016, having previously run every month since October 2014. Mega Friday was a UK promotion which guaranteed that there would be multiple winners of £1 million on the final Friday EuroMillions draw of every month, with each winner also receiving a fabulous non-cash prize such as a holiday. The introduction of Mega Week allowed players on a Tuesday as well as a Friday the opportunity to win these special prizes.
Notable Friday draw winners
Friday draws generally attract a higher number of players which has resulted in a considerable number of significant jackpot wins.
EuroMillions has only reached its jackpot cap, €190 million, on two occasions, and each time it has been won on a Friday. Adrian and Gillian Bayford from the UK banked the maximum prize, worth £148.6 million at the time, on Friday 10th August 2012, and just over two years later a ticket holder from Portugal won €190 million on Friday 24th October 2014.
Dolores McNamara, a mother of six from Limerick, won €115.4 million on 29th July 2005 and remains Ireland's largest jackpot winner to date, while Spain’s largest prize winner also struck lucky on a Friday when they won €137.3 million on 13th June 2014.
