The couple, who have opted to remain anonymous, purchased their winning Quick Pick ticket on the day of the draw from the News 4 U newsagent in the Glenroyal Shopping Centre in Maynooth. They only discovered their amazing win three days after the draw had taken place when the husband checked their ticket whilst enjoying a day off from work. He told National Lottery officials: ‘After buying the ticket on Friday evening, I had a long weekend in work so I was really looking forward to my day off on Monday. In the morning, I picked up the ticket and checked it on my phone.”
Much to the man’s delight, the ticket in his possession was worth €500,000, but he needed to confirm the win before he could take in the enormity of the situation: "I was absolutely stunned when I saw the winning numbers and it only sank in after I confirmed the win with the National Lottery. I made my way up to where my wife works and when we saw each other, we just cried tears of joy as we hugged.”
The husband went on to explain that he and his wife now plan to use their newfound wealth to begin climbing the property ladder: “We are currently living in rented accommodation at the moment and we were resigned to the fact that we probably would never have been in a position to buy our own home.” Despite news of their win being less than a week old, the pair, who describe themselves as “hard working”, have already started eyeing up properties: “We know exactly where we want to live so we will start home hunting in the next couple of days,” the husband excitedly confirmed.
In the meantime, the pair plan to celebrate their win in style: “We’re only recently married and with our work commitments, we were not in a position to take time off for a honeymoon. We’re going to make some arrangements and make sure we get away for a romantic break in January,” they beamed. “This past month has been a dream come true with the wedding and everything but to top it all off with a half a million Euro win is beyond any dream we could have.”
If you would like to join the newlyweds in celebrating a huge EuroMillions prize of your own, tonight’s jackpot is worth an estimated £15 million (€17 million). And don’t forget that there are a whole host of supplementary games to play, including Ireland’s EuroMillions Plus, UK Millionaire Maker and France’s My Million.
